Billy Lindsay: Mr

Hello,

Great site, you seem to have put a lot of effort into making it interesting, informative and well laid out so keep it up.

Myself and a couple of friends pooled our monies and bought a Disco the same age as Ralph's, we plan on spending this summer (2012) touring about Europe.  Being students our budget is very small but so far we've been pretty resourceful and have kitted our vehicle out as best we can.  We are looking upon this trip as a recce for possible adventures further afield.

Your site is not just good for practical information but also inspiration!

Cheers, Billy

Enjoyed reading all the mods you have done to the disco1, i have had one (the same 1)for the past 5 yrs, its the best vehicle i have ever purchased, i will enjoy carrying out some of the mods you have completed, am already looking for a set of Range Rover seats, but prices in NZ for parts aren't the cheapest.

Thanks for the inspiration from your website

Gramor: Just browsing

Glad to see you enjoyed the trip.

I was a bit worried that having seen your planned route posted on the LRUK forum that you had signed up for the 'exit through the gift shop tour'.

You were unlucky with the weather though, rains arrived early this year.Wink

KathGriffiths: Birds of prey!

We spotted those same birds of prey sitting on that same stretch of road on our way back to Lille. Am now beginning to wonder if they're real or if someone has nailed fake ones to the fenceposts! Maybe you can check on the way back. Hope all continues to go well - I haven't got you breaking down until France on the way back - someone had to have some faith ;-). Take care

Andrew : Driving to Cape Town

Fantastic blog, wealth of information. Planning on taking my '97 Defender to Cape Town very soon. via Jordan. I am new to Land Rovers but now fulfilling a lifetime's dream !! Well if I can drive Toyota Starlet 998 cc from Hyde Park to Ulaan Bataar in Mongolia, this has to be easier !! Got a slight technical issue, don't know if you can help ?

Took my '97 Defender 110 down to the West Country at the weekend and cruised back at a steady 70mph up the M3 last night and about 20 miles from London and started to hear this tapping/clicking noise from below. Now I am sure its something in the drivetrain as the noise pretty much went away when I pressed the clutch or i was going downhill and the gearbox was not under load, however there was still a bit of a whine. (the engine still sounds as sweet as a nut). Now weirdly when I got into the london streets the noise reduced a lot and was more noticeable in 1,3 and 5th (but then I could be going mad) ????? . There is no juddering, no more vibration than normal through the gear stick, no other tell tale signs apart from the tapping noise ? oh but the whine got more noticeable especially when I was say sitting at the lights in neutral ?? Any ideas what this could be ?

Low oil in the Gearbox / Transfer box ?
Propshaft ? However these were recently replaced by the previous owner.
Something more drastic ?

Cheers and keep up the blog !!

Dave Lewis: Stealing Ideas

Just wanted to congratulate Ralph: what a fantastic truck!

I've just started prepping a 3 door disco for overland and though I better come clean and admit I'll be stealing loads of your ideas.

Especially like the B&Q carpet job, it almost looks factory fitted!

Good luck with your trips in the future...

Ralph: Re: Rear windows

Adrian

Thanks for the comment.  Rear tints are definitely on the cards although I shall only do the rear and back doors as I intend to 'blank' out the side boot windows and add solar panels either side.   Watch this space.

Adrian Hebron: Rear windows

Nice work Ralph. I feel you need some protection for your rear and side windows. I have attached a photo of what I have done to the rear of my Disco. I just used 40mm square mesh 4mm dia and brazed a 4mm rod around the perimeter. Fit mounting tags as you wish then powder coat. Hardest part was making the cardboard templates. Also for high temperatures and security a rear window tint is helpful.

Good luck

Adrian
