"No man can live this life and emerge unchanged. He will carry the imprint of the desert, the brand which marks the nomad; and he will have a yearning to return. For this cruel land can cast a spell which no temperate climate can match."
Wilfred Thesiger, Explorer.

Days to return to the Sahara

Alan, Morag, Ralph & Belinda are driving to the Moroccan Sahara in 22 days. Check out our blogs for updates

Welcome to my pages about my 1995 Land Rover Discovery

I have compiled these pages to describe all the modifications I have made to my Discovery and the trials and tribulations involved in maintaining it.  I bought the car in 2002 with 89000 miles on the clock.  Since then it has been off road in Norfolk, Suffolk, Wales and Derbyshire, taken us to Marakech and some of the way back and allowed me to spend my 50th birthday in the Tunisian Sahara.

I have made modifications to make her better off road, more comfortable, easier to live out of and perform better.  I hope these pages will benefit anyone who is looking for ideas in the same way that so many others have helped me.

It started life as a standard avalon blue ES spec disco.  And now she looks like this:

LRmax1For the first few years she spent her time as my daily use vehicle, carrying out 4x4 Response duties and greenlaning across the UK.

In 2008 the car underwent a complete transformation to make her into an 'overland expedition vehicle' in preparation for a trip to the Sahara in Morocco (which went horribly wrong).

In 2010, after further modification and reparation work, including a new engine, the disco took us through France, into Tunisia across the Chott el Jerid salt flats and into the Sahara.

It is now being tweaked and prepared for March 2012 when we plan to return to Morocco, hoping make it to the Western Sahara for the first time.
