With the update to the rear storage system I had lost the dog guard and the support for the upper shelf. The space near the roof was so useful that I didn't want to lose it, so I hit upon a cunning plan.
I need to create a lightweight shelf, supported securely.

The first step was to build a lightweight frame. I used EasyFix fittings from Aluminium Warehouse. This is an economical and simple way to build any 'frame like' structure. |

I then fixed 6mm ply on the top and secured it with self tapping screws. Once fixed it became incredibly rigid. |

To stop stuff moving about I added a Cargo net from MudStuff UK. I secured this using the self tappers and washers. On the middle one on the front edge I fitted a M10 nut to act as a spacer so that I could 'unhook' the net to put stuff under it. |

The upper rear seat belt mounts and rear passenger grab handles, very handily, are in line with each other. I made some aluminium brackets and fixed these in place. It's not that easy to see in this picture, but...

....a bit clearer on this one |

The shelf has to be 'inserted' through the front (once you remove the front grab handles) and then sits on the 4 brackets. I then drilled up through the brackets and secured it with more self tappers. |

This shows the view from the front. It will easily take the 2 folding seats and several other lightweight bits and bobs and still allow me to see clearly through the rear window. I intend to add a couple of channels beneath the shelf so that I can slide a lightweight table underneath. I shall up date this article when I manage to get it done. |
